Cookie Policy

What Are Cookies?

Cookies are small text files that are placed on your computer or mobile device when you visit a website. They are widely used by website owners to make their websites work more efficiently and to provide reporting information.

This website sets no cookies of its own. It uses one third-party analytics service, described below, and that service sets cookies in your browser. Everything else this site remembers about your visit is stored locally in your browser and is never sent anywhere.

How We Use Cookies

There is one purpose, not several:

  • Analytics: to count visits and see which pages are read, so we know whether what we publish is being read at all

What This Site Stores In Your Browser

This site needs no cookie to work. The one preference it remembers is kept in your browser's local storage, which is not a cookie and is never transmitted to us or to anyone else. Clearing it costs you nothing but the setting itself.

Analytics Cookies

When analytics is enabled on this site, pages load Google Analytics 4, which sets the cookies below to count visits and distinguish one visitor's session from another's. They are set by Google, not by us, and the exact names and lifetimes are Google's to change. We do not read them, and no other third-party service sets cookies here.

What The Analytics Service Receives

The measurement on this site is the standard page-view tag and nothing more. It records:

  • Page views: which addresses on this site were opened, and when
  • Technical data: the device, browser and approximate location the request came from, as the analytics service derives them

What It Does Not Record

Named because a policy that lists only what is collected cannot be checked against a site that collects less. This site does not measure:

  • Reading time, scroll depth, or any other measure of engagement with an article
  • Contact form submissions or newsletter signups as tracked events
  • Search keywords or any attribution of how you arrived
  • Anything you type into a form on this site

Content Delivery

Images on this site may be delivered from a third-party content network. Such services can set cookies of their own for performance and security purposes; what they set is theirs to state, not ours.

You can opt out of Google Analytics entirely by installing the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on, which stops the measurement on this site and on every other site that uses it.

Managing Your Cookie Preferences

Most web browsers allow you to control cookies through their settings preferences. You can set your browser to refuse cookies or delete certain cookies. Because this site sets no cookies of its own and needs none, refusing or deleting them does not stop any part of it working. Here's how to manage cookies in popular browsers:

  • Chrome: Settings > Privacy and security > Cookies and other site data
  • Firefox: Settings > Privacy & Security > Cookies and Site Data
  • Safari: Preferences > Privacy > Manage Website Data
  • Edge: Settings > Cookies and site permissions > Cookies and site data

Cookie Consent

This site shows no cookie consent banner, and does not ask you to accept or decline anything. The only cookies set here are the analytics cookies described above, and the way to refuse them is the way described under Managing Your Cookie Preferences: your browser's settings, or the opt-out add-on. We would rather say that plainly than show you a choice we do not actually offer.

Data Protection and Privacy

The information collected through cookies is processed in accordance with our Privacy Policy. We hold no cookie data ourselves: the analytics cookies are set and read by the analytics provider, and what we see is the aggregated reporting that service produces.

For trading technology clients, we take extra precautions to ensure that any data collected through cookies does not compromise trading security or confidentiality.

Updates to This Cookie Policy

We may update this Cookie Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices or applicable laws. We will notify you of any significant changes by posting the updated policy on this page with a new "last updated" date.

Your Rights

Depending on your location, you may have certain rights regarding cookies and personal data:

  • Right to Access: Request information about cookies and data we collect
  • Right to Delete: Request deletion of cookie data (subject to legal requirements)
  • Right to Opt-out: Refuse the analytics cookies at any time, through your browser's settings or the opt-out add-on described above. There is no banner to withdraw consent in, and none is needed
  • Right to Portability: Request your data in a portable format
